From Drums To Inflight Phones (August 1998)
When Daigle Design, a Bainbridge Island graphic design group, was asked by the Aviation Communications section of AT&T Wireless Services division to design an invitation for a party in South Africa, they knew it had to be special. The occasion was an international conference of aviation and communications industry leaders in Durban, South Africa, a beautiful city with a rich and diverse cultural background. The challenge was to entice a group of busy executives to choose the party hosted by AT&T and AEI Music Network, on a night that offered plenty of social activity. By creating the theme of The Drums. They Are Calling You., Daigle Design set a festive mood that incorporated the traditional communications of the region and the vibrant colors of the local arts that flourish in Durban. The theme provided a perfect tie-in, since AT&T had chosen the Durban Art Gallery as the location for the gala evening. To make the invitation something that was sure to be noticed by busy corporate execs, it was delivered inside a drum-shaped, round metal tin with an artistic label on top. It was packaged in a small, white custom box of the size usually reserved for special items. We designed a series of very colorful, round, chipboard-backed invitation pagesthat provided information about the event. The artwork selected for these coaster-sized pages featured the dance, costume and drums of the region, as illustrated by Seattle artist Don Baker. These pages were die-cut to fit the round tin just right.
